The Torino Foundation and its Camp Partners count on over 400 volunteers each summer who are passionate about helping children with life threatening illnesses or who are experiencing life challenging situations. Our volunteers are dedicated to making the time spent at camp a once in a life time experience for the campers.
After eleven years of camping experiences involving thousands of critically ill children, a great number of our volunteers are now returning volunteers who have become family and don’t ever want to miss a camp season. Many of our volunteers give up their vacation time every year to be able to participate in the magic of summer camp at Torino Ranch. We are gifted with volunteers who have survived cancer and offer a unique compassion and inspiration to our children. In fact, we have volunteers who were once campers at Torino Ranch and are now in remission or cured and who remember how important camp was in their own lives.
Volunteers assist with all aspects of camp; helping to create fond memories through activities ranging from arts and crafts classes, canoeing on our beautiful lake, or enjoying songs around the campfire. They encourage and assist the campers in challenging themselves on our climbing wall and archery range and provide fun and games in the Ga Ga Pit and on the grass game field.
Many volunteers find inspiration in the Torino Foundation mission of healing through healthy eating and enjoyable exercise. Health through exercise and a diet of nutritious, organic food is the personal lifestyle choice of our founder, Brett Torino. The Torino Foundation is committed to improving the health of our children through providing healthy food choices and increasing their awareness of how exercise and diet contribute to the process of healing. Volunteers take pride in working behind the scenes preparing and serving healthy nutritious meals and snacks and in providing a clean sanitary environment for our campers.
The Foundation’s commitment to the environment is demonstrated through our recycling program and the use of biodegradable products wherever possible. Facilities are cleaned and sanitized with products that are not harmful to the environment or caustic to our campers. Volunteers have an important role in sharing environmental awareness with Torino Foundation campers.
Volunteers participate in pre-camp training programs and post-camp critiques to identify ways we can improve each and every year. This feedback is significant to the Foundation and is used to plan and prioritize changes that will enhance the camp experience for future campers and volunteers.
As many of our volunteers leave camp for the first time, they are overwhelmed by their own experience and the understanding that they have received more back from the campers than they have given.
